March of Dimes Awards Grant to Baltimore Healthy Start in order to Improve the Health of Mothers and Babies in Targeted Baltimore City Communities

(Baltimore, MD. January 23, 2014) The March of Dimes Maryland National Capital Area Chapter has awarded a Community Grant to Baltimore Healthy Start to support a safe sleep initiative entitled the Sleep Sack Project. The project is aimed at underserved maternal and child health needs in Sandtown-Winchester, Rosemount and the Middle East communities. This program will improve our safe sleep efforts by enhancing our in-home presentation by an Outreach Specialist and providing HALO sleep sacks to clients. We intend to use this as a strategic way to promote health behavior change while equipping our clients with quality materials. Landro wrote in an 2013 article that Sleep Sacks remove the need to use loose bedding such as blankets and makes swaddling convenient. We believe that providing Sleep Sacks are the way forward and will improve safety measures.

This grant is one of many that the March of Dimes awards in pursuit of its mission to prevent birth defects and infant mortality.

"We will use the March of Dimes grant as seed money to meet our objective of providing mothers and babies with in-home education and sleep sacks," said Maxine Reed-Vance, Director of Clinical Affairs and Quality Assurance, for Baltimore Healthy Start. "We are grateful to those volunteers who support the March of Dimes by participation in events like March for Babies and who donate in other ways. That participation and those donations make this grant possible, " she said.

Baltimore Healthy Start is committed to reducing infant mortality in Baltimore City by utilizing a Life Course Perspective for improving the health and well-being of families through intensive home based services. In its 22 years of service BHS has served more than 16,000 pregnant and postpartum women.

The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
